Ethiopia-UAE Digital Skills Initiative Expands, Boosting AI Training for Millions

Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates have significantly expanded their joint digital skills program, the "5 Million Ethiopian Coders initiative," to now target seven million participants. This expansion follows the program's remarkable success in surpassing its original five-million-enrolment goal nearly two years ahead of schedule, with over 5,005,146 enrolments recorded by June 2026. The announcement, made in Dubai, highlights the strong interest from Ethiopian youth in acquiring technology skills.

Launched in July 2024, the initiative stands as one of Africa's largest digital skills programs, offering free online training through the Udacity platform. Courses are typically six to seven weeks long and are delivered in English through various educational institutions across Ethiopia, with a specific aim to ensure at least half of all participants are women.
