New Guide Helps African Nonprofits Strategically Adopt AI for Social Impact

The Bridgespan Group has released a comprehensive report titled "Pursuing the Promise of AI: A Guide for African Nonprofits to Advance Their Missions," offering a practical roadmap for non-profit organizations across Africa to leverage artificial intelligence. The guide, based on insights from over 40 experts including nonprofits, funders, and social enterprises, focuses on how AI can enhance service delivery, strengthen programs, and address critical challenges in sectors like health, education, livelihoods, and agriculture.
The report emphasizes a problem-first approach to AI adoption, urging nonprofits to identify specific challenges before considering AI as a solution. It highlights that while many African nonprofits use AI for productivity, the focus should be on "mission-driven AI" – applications that directly improve or scale programs and services. This strategic perspective ensures that AI implementation is responsible and impactful, rather than merely a technological pursuit.
The research outlines a four-stage journey for mission-driven AI adoption: Explore & Prepare, Prove & Learn, Embed & Operate, and Sustain or Scale. Each stage provides guidance on critical considerations, from assessing organizational readiness and piloting use cases to integrating AI into daily operations and planning for long-term sustainability. The guide also acknowledges the importance of a supportive ecosystem, including access to digital infrastructure, context-specific data, and appropriate funding, to ensure successful AI integration.
For African nonprofits, this guide is significant as it provides tailored advice for navigating the complexities of AI adoption within the local context. It empowers organizations to make informed decisions about where AI can genuinely advance their missions, fostering greater efficiency and reach in their efforts to serve communities across the continent. The report also calls on funders and other stakeholders to provide the necessary support to bridge existing gaps in infrastructure and capacity.
