Why we exist

The global AI conversation too often overlooks Africa — its researchers, startups, policymakers, and the real-world impact of AI on its people. Coverage that does exist is scattered across hundreds of outlets in many languages. AfricaDailyAI brings it into one place: a focused, daily, plain-language read on the AI stories that actually matter for the continent.

How it works

Every day, an automated pipeline does the heavy lifting so a human editor can focus on judgment rather than search:

• Discover. We monitor a large, growing list of vetted feeds — African and international outlets, research hubs, and publishers — and pull in new items.
• Filter. A fast first pass drops anything with no genuine African connection before any expensive analysis runs.
• Read the full story. We resolve redirects and fetch the full article — not just a headline — so judgments are made on the real text.
• Analyze & rewrite. A large language model assesses each story and writes an original-voice English summary, a category, and topic tags. It never copies the source verbatim.
• Score & route. Each story gets a confidence score (below). The strongest, fully-sourced stories can publish automatically; everything else waits in a queue for human review.
• Publish & digest.Approved stories go live and the day’s best are bundled into one email dispatch.

The confidence score

Not every story deserves the same trust. To decide what publishes and what a human checks first, we compute a single confidence score from 0 to 100 for each story, from two independent judgments:

• Relevance (0–100) — how strongly the story is bothgenuinely about AI and meaningfully connected to Africa. A passing mention of the continent scores low; an AI story centered on Africa scores high.
• Credibility (0–100) — how reputable the source is and how well its claims are supported. A primary source or established outlet scores high; an anonymous or unsupported post scores low.

The accessibility guard

If a feed gives us only a headline or a one-line snippet, we can’t fairly judge the article on its merits. Those stories take a fixed −25 point penalty, can never publish automatically, and are always routed to a human. This keeps thin, unverifiable items out of the newsletter.

What the score decides

• Below the relevance floor— the story isn’t really about AI in Africa, and is discarded.
• High confidence and fully sourced — the story can be published automatically and considered for the daily email.
• Everything in between — a human editor reviews, edits, and decides.

The score is a triage tool, not the last word. A person can approve, edit, reject, or re-categorize any story, and thin or borderline items always get human eyes.

Editorial standards

• Always sourced.Every story links back to its original publisher. We summarize and contextualize; we don’t replace the source.
• Original voice. Summaries are rewritten for clarity, never copied verbatim from the source.
• Transparent about AI. Our summaries are AI-assisted and can contain errors — always check the linked original before relying on any detail.
• Corrections.Spotted a mistake or a story we mischaracterized? Tell us and we’ll fix it.
