The nation, already a prime target for cyberattacks, saw a significant increase in incidents in 2025, imposing substantial financial and operational burdens across businesses, government, and consumers. Furthermore, only 8% integrate security testing throughout the software development lifecycle, leaving organizations exposed.
The consequences of these vulnerabilities are stark, as evidenced by the 2021 cyberattack on a state-owned freight company that crippled supply chains and economic activity. As AI matures, its potential to amplify the impact of such incidents grows, with reports indicating AI's use in vulnerability discovery and attack planning. This necessitates a proactive approach to security, integrating it from the initial stages of digital and AI initiatives.
To mitigate these risks and harness AI's benefits, South African organizations must embed security into their decision-making processes, focusing on robust cloud governance, data management, identity controls, and application security. Simultaneously, they should leverage AI-powered tools for threat detection and vulnerability management to enhance their defensive capabilities. Strengthening cyber resilience is paramount for realizing the opportunities presented by AI while effectively managing its inherent risks.
