Nigerian Defence-Tech Firm Terra Industries Secures $52M Seed Funding, Eyes Global Expansion from Ghanaian Manufacturing Hub

Terra Industries, a Nigerian company specializing in autonomous defence systems, has successfully closed its seed funding round at $52 million. This significant investment, which includes both existing and new investors, will fuel the expansion of its manufacturing capabilities at the Pax-2 factory in Ghana, described as Africa's largest drone facility.

The company, co-founded by Nathan Nwachuku and Maxwell Maduka, positions itself as a vertically integrated defence prime, offering both hardware like drones and counter-drone systems, and its ArtemisOS software for orchestrating security operations. Terra's systems currently secure assets worth approximately $11 billion, primarily in the energy and mining sectors, and it anticipates over $100 million in contract bookings by year-end.

A key aspect of Terra's strategy is to address Africa's reliance on foreign defence suppliers, particularly from China, Russia, and Europe. By providing locally serviceable systems, Terra aims to enhance data sovereignty and reduce dependence on 'black box' solutions. This approach has already led to multi-million-dollar contracts with African governments and critical infrastructure operators, including a federal contract in Nigeria.

While Terra plans international offices in London, San Francisco, and Washington DC, its core manufacturing and initial market remain firmly rooted in Africa. The company's immediate challenge is to scale production at Pax-2 to meet the high demand for unmanned and counter-unmanned aerial vehicles from African militaries, and to convert its substantial contract bookings into delivered revenue. This expansion represents a pivotal moment for indigenous African defence technology.
