Idris Elba's Akuna Group, in partnership with Google, launches free AI filmmaking program for African creators

The Akuna Group, chaired by Sir Idris Elba, has announced a new initiative called "From Script to Screen with AI," a free filmmaking program designed for aspiring and emerging creators in Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and South Africa. This program, delivered through Akuna Learning, aims to equip African filmmakers with the necessary skills to leverage AI tools throughout the entire filmmaking process, from initial script development to final production.
Funded by a US$1 million grant from Google.org and with a curriculum developed by Curious Refuge, the 50-week program will commence with a 12-week online academy from February to April 2027. Participants will receive foundational training in AI filmmaking and then progress to mentorship, project development, and pitching. Successful teams will secure production funding for their projects, which are slated for showcase in October 2027.
Sir Idris Elba emphasized that the program is about providing access to education and empowering African creators to tell their own stories, fostering employment and shaping the continent's narrative. Khaled Gad, CEO of The Akuna Group, highlighted that the initiative goes beyond mere training by offering a complete pathway from learning to producing and distributing creative work. Applicants do not need prior AI experience or film school qualifications, but must be at least 18, reside in one of the five target countries, and submit existing creative work.
This initiative addresses the growing potential of AI in film production, including scriptwriting, animation, and visual effects, by offering a structured pathway for African talent to harness these technologies. The program also ensures creators retain full control and ownership of their work, promoting independent storytelling.
