Nigerian Fintech Mida Leverages AI to Tackle Digital Lending Defaults

Mida, a Nigerian fintech startup, has spent its first 1000 days evolving its approach to digital lending, particularly focusing on the critical challenge of loan recovery. Founded by three former Renmoney executives, Mayowa Anibaba, Okeroghene Egbi, and Adija Uzodinma, Mida initially aimed to streamline lending processes but quickly pivoted to address the overwhelming demand from lenders for solutions to combat rising loan defaults in Nigeria's booming digital credit market.
The company's journey saw it expand from a basic recovery tool, Mida Collect, to a comprehensive enterprise platform, Mida Omni, which integrates digital collections, call-center operations, and portfolio segmentation. Further innovation led to MidaX, designed to assist recovery agents with field activities and borrower location. This evolution highlighted a key challenge: scaling a people-intensive recovery operation into a sustainable technology company.
To overcome this, Mida began integrating Artificial Intelligence across its credit infrastructure. The company is now using AI to enhance borrower data and improve lending decisions, moving beyond just recovery to proactively mitigate default risks. This strategic shift positions Mida to offer more scalable and technologically advanced solutions for the Nigerian and potentially broader African digital lending space.
Having secured a $400,000 pre-seed round from Founders Factory Africa and onboarded major clients like Access Holdings' OxygenX, Mida demonstrates a significant impact on the financial technology landscape. Its focus on AI-driven solutions for loan recovery and credit scoring addresses a critical pain point in Africa's rapidly expanding digital lending sector, which is plagued by increasing default rates.
