Idris Elba's Akuna Group Launches Free AI Filmmaking Initiative for African Talent with Google Support

Akuna Learning, an arm of Idris Elba's Akuna Group, has initiated a complimentary AI filmmaking program targeting emerging creators across South Africa, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, and Sierra Leone. The program, titled "From Script to Screen with AI," is designed to equip participants with skills in leveraging AI tools throughout the entire filmmaking process, from initial story development to final production.

This initiative is a collaborative effort with Google, receiving $1 million in funding from Google.org. The curriculum itself was developed by Curious Refuge, an AI filmmaking school. Participants will undergo comprehensive AI filmmaking training, followed by mentorship, project development, and pitching opportunities. The program emphasizes accessibility, requiring no prior film school background or AI experience, though applicants must have reliable access to a laptop, internet, and electricity.

Idris Elba, Chairman of the Akuna Group, expressed his anticipation for the narratives that will emerge from the program and its potential to foster employment and self-sufficiency, ultimately shaping Africa's storytelling landscape. The program actively encourages applications from women, highlighting an inclusive approach to talent development in the rapidly evolving field of AI-driven creative industries. Applications are open until November 15, 2026.
