Google Launches Pan-African Digital Skills Hub to Train 3 Million in AI by 2030

Google has unveiled "Skilling Africa with Google," a new unified learning platform designed to significantly expand access to digital and AI skills across the African continent. This initiative consolidates over 15 existing Google training programs, including Google Career Certificates and Google Cloud Skills, into a single, personalized hub. The ambitious goal is to equip 3 million individuals in Africa with essential digital and AI competencies by the year 2030, building on previous programs that have already trained 7 million young Africans.
The platform directly addresses the unique challenges faced by African learners, such as high data costs, inconsistent connectivity, limited device access, and language diversity. Its design prioritizes low data consumption and offline functionality, allowing users to download lessons via Wi-Fi and complete them without an internet connection. The hub also integrates an AI-powered study companion, SCOUT, which provides personalized learning support and guidance, alongside gamified features to encourage engagement and track progress.
Google highlights an "AI paradox" in Africa, where strong enthusiasm for digital technology is hampered by critical infrastructure gaps and a severe shortage of skilled talent. The company projects a potential US$2.9 trillion AI-driven economic opportunity for the continent, yet notes that over 90% of African businesses report a deficit in AI-ready professionals. This initiative aims to bridge that talent gap, fostering an environment where Africans can actively participate in and contribute to the global digital economy.
Alex Okosi, MD of Google Africa, emphasized that unlocking Africa's potential to shape the future of AI requires a skilled workforce capable of building, utilizing, and innovating with these technologies. By making digital and AI learning readily accessible and tailored to local conditions, Google seeks to empower a new generation of African professionals, developers, and entrepreneurs. The platform is free, openly accessible, and launched across Africa on November 2nd.
