AfDB and UNDP Accelerate $10 Billion AI Initiative for African Development

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) are advancing their "AI 10 Billion Initiative" from its initial launch phase to active delivery. This significant step follows a recent delegation visit by UNDP to the AfDB headquarters in Côte d'Ivoire, signaling a concrete move towards implementing the ambitious program.

Co-designed with private sector partners, the initiative aims to mobilize $1 billion annually for the next decade, totaling $10 billion. This funding is projected to create 25 million new jobs across Africa by 2035, significantly boosting the continent's productivity and economic growth. The program will initially roll out in five countries, with plans to expand to 20 by the end of 2027, inviting broad participation from governments, development finance institutions, private investors, and philanthropies.

The AfDB contributes its financial resources, extensive network across 54 regional member countries, and a strong evidence base, including its 2025 report "Africa’s AI Productivity Gain." This report forecasts that inclusive AI adoption could add up to $1 trillion to Africa's GDP by 2035, with key sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and finance poised for significant gains. The UNDP complements this with its on-the-ground country presence and technical expertise through its AI Hub for Sustainable Development.

Both organizations emphasize that the necessary capital for foundational AI infrastructure—energy, data, and skills—already exists. The initiative's core focus is to align this capital and foster a shared vision to ensure AI's benefits translate into enhanced competitiveness, widespread employment, and inclusive growth throughout Africa. This strategic partnership underscores a concerted effort to harness AI for sustainable development and address the continent's demographic dividend of over 300 million young people entering the workforce in the next decade.
