Raxio Data Centres Secure $380M Investment, Fueling Pan-African AI Infrastructure Growth

Raxio Data Centres, a prominent Pan-African operator, has successfully raised over $380 million in committed capital, largely due to increased investment from existing shareholders Roha and Meridiam. This significant financial boost comes as the company reports a sixfold surge in contracted power capacity over the past year, a demand spike directly attributed to the escalating needs of cloud computing and, notably, artificial intelligence (AI) workloads across the continent.

Operating Tier III-certified, carrier-neutral facilities in Uganda, Ethiopia, Mozambique, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Côte d'Ivoire, and Angola, with plans for expansion into Tanzania, Raxio positions itself as a leader in greenfield data center development in Africa. The company is strategically investing in higher rack densities and exploring renewable energy integration to meet the evolving requirements of high-performance computing and AI infrastructure.

The dramatic increase in demand reflects a broader global shift towards data centers optimized for AI training and inference, moving from traditional air-cooled facilities to more advanced, liquid-cooled architectures. This trend aligns with projections from consultancies like McKinsey, which anticipates substantial growth in Africa's data center capacity by 2030, requiring billions in new investment and unlocking significant revenue opportunities.

While McKinsey cautions that Africa's data center growth will be uneven, influenced by factors such as power reliability and regulatory conditions, Raxio's strategy of expanding into diverse, second-tier markets outside the continent's established hubs (like South Africa) signifies a confident bet. The company's recent capital injection and surge in demand suggest that the AI-driven build-out is beginning to spread across Africa, fostering a more distributed and robust digital infrastructure for the continent.
