Egypt Invests $1 Billion in Sovereign AI Data Centers to Boost Digital Economy

Egypt is making a significant move to establish its digital sovereignty by investing in local data and compute power infrastructure, reducing its reliance on overseas facilities. This ambition was solidified through two agreements signed by Vodafone Business, ElSewedy Electric, and Cassava Technologies.

The first agreement will lead to the creation of Africa Data Centers Egypt (ADC Egypt), which plans to build the country's largest data center. This project aims for a substantial 200 MW capacity, with an initial 20 MW phase expected within three years, backed by an investment of $200 million, potentially reaching $1 billion for the full capacity. This initiative is projected to create 200 direct and 2,000 indirect jobs.

The second, more ambitious agreement between Vodafone Business and Cassava Technologies, focuses on developing Egypt's first sovereign AI data center. This facility will leverage NVIDIA's computing technology, with Cassava acting as NVIDIA's inaugural cloud partner in Africa. It will offer GPU-as-a-Service, providing Egyptian businesses with on-demand access to high-performance computing necessary for processing large datasets and developing advanced AI models, all while ensuring data security and regulatory compliance within Egypt.

Historically, Egyptian businesses running serious AI workloads had to depend on foreign cloud infrastructure, leading to data security concerns, higher costs, and compliance issues. The establishment of this local sovereign AI facility will address these challenges, offering secure, high-performance computing resources domestically. This strategic investment positions Egypt as a regional leader in digital infrastructure and AI, attracting further investment, fostering job creation, and enhancing the nation's digital economy.
