Dangote Refinery Boosts Operations with Honeywell's AI Industrial System in Nigeria

Honeywell has deployed its Forge Plant Cognition AI system at the Dangote Petroleum Refinery in Lekki, Nigeria. This system is designed to enhance operational efficiency, improve production, and support decision-making for workers. Honeywell estimates that this AI integration could yield over $60 million in annual benefits once the refinery reaches its full processing capacity.
The Forge Plant Cognition platform leverages AI tools from NVIDIA to analyze refinery data, identify potential issues, and facilitate troubleshooting. It also features the capability to create digital twins of equipment and processes, enabling engineers to simulate and test changes in a virtual environment before physical implementation. Dell Technologies provides the necessary computing infrastructure to support this advanced AI deployment.
Both Honeywell and Dangote Petroleum Refinery spokespersons highlighted the strategic importance of this collaboration. Rajesh Gattupalli of Honeywell emphasized the transformative potential of AI in industrial operations, while David Bird of Dangote noted the system's role in optimizing operations, increasing value, and modernizing equipment management. This initiative aligns with Dangote's ambitious plans to significantly expand the refinery's processing capacity from 650,000 to 1.4 million barrels per day within three years, with Honeywell's AI system playing a crucial role in improving current operations and accelerating future expansion efforts.
Beyond technical optimization, the AI system is also intended to assist refinery workers in accessing technical information and resolving problems more efficiently. This deployment represents a significant step in integrating advanced AI technologies into critical industrial infrastructure within Africa, demonstrating a concrete application of AI for large-scale economic impact.
