Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology Opens Applications for African AI Startup Funding Program

The Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST), based in Accra, Ghana, has launched its 2027 AI Startup Program, offering significant pre-seed investment and comprehensive training to promising African AI founders. This initiative directly addresses the critical capital gap faced by AI startups across the continent. Despite a global surge in AI investment, African AI ventures secured a mere 1-1.5% of worldwide AI spending in 2025, with early-stage deals representing an even smaller fraction.

The program aims to transform technical skills into fundable companies by providing selected teams with up to $100,000 in pre-seed investment. It includes a rigorous seven-month full-time residential training phase in Accra, followed by a four-month incubation period for the most viable ventures. Participants will collaborate to validate AI business ideas, develop minimum viable products, and gain insights from industry leaders at companies like OpenAI, Perplexity, and Google, alongside MEST practitioners.

The MEST program has a long-standing history, having trained African software entrepreneurs since 2008. By focusing specifically on AI, this new cohort seeks to nurture the next generation of innovators who can leverage artificial intelligence to solve local challenges and compete on a global scale. The application deadline for this transformative opportunity is July 20, 2026.
