South African AI Customer Service Innovator Cue Secures $5 Million Investment for Expansion

South African artificial intelligence company, Cue, has successfully raised R82 million, equivalent to $5 million, in a funding round co-led by Knife Capital and FAM Investments. This substantial capital injection is earmarked for scaling Cue's advanced AI customer service platform and facilitating its expansion into new markets. The funding marks the largest raise to date for the company, building on previous pre-seed and seed rounds in 2023 and 2024.

Initially focused on managing customer chats across various messaging applications like WhatsApp, Cue has strategically pivoted its core business. The company now specializes in developing sophisticated AI agents capable of autonomously handling customer inquiries from initiation to resolution, minimizing the need for human intervention. These AI agents currently resolve over 60% of customer conversations independently, with plans to introduce a second generation of agents that will tackle more complex tasks such as order tracking, appointment scheduling, and lead qualification.

Cue's innovative software is presently utilized by more than 500 businesses across the UK and South Africa, serving diverse sectors including automotive, retail, insurance, finance, and education. The company processes over half a billion messages and conversations annually, demonstrating robust growth with its annual recurring revenue increasing by over 160% in the last financial year. CEO Richard Nischk highlighted the current "inflection point for AI in customer service," emphasizing the need for unified platforms over fragmented solutions.

The newly acquired funding will be strategically deployed to bolster Cue's engineering capabilities, specifically focusing on voice infrastructure and security enhancements. Furthermore, a significant portion will be allocated to expanding sales and marketing efforts within its established markets of the UK and South Africa, alongside facilitating entry into new geographic territories. This investment underscores the growing potential of African tech startups to attract significant capital and innovate in the global AI landscape.

For Africa, this development signifies a notable advancement in the continent's burgeoning AI ecosystem. A homegrown South African company is not only developing cutting-edge AI solutions but also attracting substantial investment to scale its operations. This success story can inspire other African entrepreneurs and demonstrate the viability of developing and deploying advanced AI technologies from the continent, contributing to digital transformation and job creation within the region.
