Nigerian AI Startup Secures $2M Deals to Protect Lithium Mines with Autonomous Security Systems

Terra Industries, a Nigerian defense-tech startup, has announced its first commercial contracts worth $2 million to provide autonomous security for lithium mining operations in Nigeria. The company will deploy 20 sentry towers and four Iroko drones, managed by its ArtemisOS command-and-control layer, to offer surveillance, real-time threat detection, and response across two mining sites. This marks a significant expansion of Terra's commercial division, which aims to sell autonomous security systems to private infrastructure operators across various regions.

The contracts validate Terra's strategic shift towards private sector security, leveraging its in-house manufacturing capabilities to offer cost-effective hardware. The company states its systems currently protect assets valued at approximately $11 billion, primarily in the energy and mining sectors. This move addresses Nigeria's critical need for securing strategic mineral resources like lithium, which has been plagued by illegal mining activities, even as the government seeks to attract investment in battery material processing.

However, the deals bring into focus questions of data sovereignty, given Terra's funding ties to 8VC and Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale, and the leadership of its commercial division by a Palantir veteran. The data collected from these security operations—including movement patterns and operational vulnerabilities—could be as valuable as the lithium itself, raising concerns about who controls this intelligence. While a commercial win for Terra, these contracts present a political test regarding the company's stated mission to empower the Global South with technological autonomy.
