Nigerian Startup Maiaddy Develops AI-Powered Addressing System After NIPOST Snub

Maiaddy, a Nigerian location identity infrastructure startup, has launched Maimaps, a new location intelligence platform designed to tackle Nigeria's persistent addressing challenges. The company initially sought a partnership with the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) to integrate its technology into the national infrastructure but faced rejection. Undeterred, Maiaddy decided to independently develop its solution, aiming to provide a more consistent and reliable way to describe locations across the country.

The inadequacy of Nigeria's addressing system poses significant economic and operational hurdles. E-commerce, food delivery, and ride-hailing services, despite their growth, are hampered by unreliable addresses, leading to substantial financial losses—estimated at over ₦50 billion ($36.5 million) annually due to failed deliveries. Beyond logistics, poor location infrastructure impacts banking, emergency services, utilities, and government planning, highlighting a critical need for innovation in this sector.

Previous attempts to modernize addressing in Nigeria, including government reforms and global tech solutions like Google Maps and Plus Codes, have not fully resolved the issue. Maiaddy identifies a key gap: while digital maps rely on geographic coordinates, human navigation often incorporates local context and knowledge. Maimaps aims to bridge this by combining modern technologies with mapping infrastructure to interpret locations in a way that aligns with how people actually describe them.

The core of Maiaddy's platform is the "loccode," a persistent digital identifier assigned to streets and notable locations. This system allows users to register individual addresses to a single loccode, making them easier to reference even where formal naming is incomplete or inconsistent. The goal is to establish a standardized layer of location identity that can be adopted by various applications and organizations, thereby improving accuracy and efficiency across multiple sectors. The success of Maimaps will depend on its ability to achieve widespread adoption and network effects, encouraging businesses, government, and individuals to embrace this new standard.
