African Leadership Takes Center Stage as Kagame Co-Chairs New Global AI Commission

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has been appointed co-chair of the newly launched AI for Good Global Commission, an initiative aimed at promoting equitable access to artificial intelligence and narrowing the global digital divide. This appointment positions Africa at the forefront of international discussions on AI governance, emphasizing the continent's growing influence in shaping the future of this transformative technology.

The Commission, unveiled in Geneva, brings together over 40 founding members, including heads of state, technology executives from companies like Microsoft and Google, and leaders from the United Nations. Its core mission is to foster trust in AI, expand its accessibility, and accelerate its application in solving global challenges, with a particular focus on ensuring that developing countries are not left behind in the AI revolution.

President Kagame underscored the importance of technology remaining "a force for good" and called for enhanced international cooperation to reduce inequality, ensuring that more citizens globally benefit from AI-driven innovation. The inclusion of African entities such as the MTN Group, the African Union, and governments from Rwanda, Namibia, and Nigeria among its members further solidifies the commission's commitment to integrating African perspectives.

For Africa, this commission represents a crucial platform to advocate for policies and solutions tailored to the continent's unique context and challenges. With approximately 2.2 billion people still lacking internet access, many residing in Africa, the commission's priority of closing the digital gap directly addresses a fundamental barrier to AI adoption and benefit across the continent.

By actively participating in and co-chairing such a high-level global body, Africa is not merely a recipient of AI advancements but a key architect of its ethical development and equitable distribution, ensuring that the technology serves humanity broadly and inclusively.
