Kenyan Political Operative Used Anthropic's Claude for AI-Generated Election Propaganda

Anthropic, the AI company behind the Claude chatbot, has revealed that a political operator in Kenya utilized their generative AI tool to create a large volume of social media propaganda. This content was designed to praise government officials and criticize opposition figures in anticipation of the 2027 general election. The operator specifically instructed Claude to produce posts that appeared to be spontaneous grassroots commentary, rather than part of a coordinated campaign.

The operation involved generating batches of 50 tweets at a time, promoting pro-government narratives, particularly regarding energy policy, and spreading claims about the disunity of the United Opposition coalition. While Anthropic identified and removed the account, they emphasized that there was no evidence the campaign successfully reached or influenced real people. The company also found no direct link to the Kenyan government or any political party, describing it as an "entirely domestic Kenyan operation."

This incident provides an early insight into how generative AI could be misused to shape political discourse in Africa.
