GITEX Nigeria Emphasizes Sovereign AI and Digital Transformation for a $1 Trillion Economy

The second edition of GITEX Nigeria, West Africa's largest tech, AI, and start-up event, has officially opened in Abuja. The event, held under the patronage of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, brings together senior government officials, international technology leaders, and digital economy stakeholders to advance Nigeria's digital transformation and its ambitions for sovereign AI.

Key discussions at the event, including the Abuja Government Leadership & AI Summit, focused on moving Nigeria beyond mere technology consumption to indigenous innovation and global production. Leaders highlighted initiatives like DL4ALL, 3MTT, and Project BRIDGE, which aim to scale technical talent, expand digital inclusion, and build necessary policy and cloud infrastructure for responsible AI deployment and local data hosting.

Lagos State Governor H.E. Babajide Sanwo-Olu emphasized the need for compute infrastructure in Africa, noting that the continent's AI workloads are currently processed in Europe, creating latency, cost, and data sovereignty issues. He positioned Lagos, with its extensive subsea cable capacity and new electricity law, as an ideal hub to address this challenge and attract international capital into digital infrastructure, rather than solely consumer fintech.

The event underscores a shared commitment from federal and state leaders to leverage technology for economic transformation, aiming for a $1 trillion economy. It provides a platform for aligning government vision with private sector execution, fostering a transition from being technology consumers to global producers of talent, sovereign infrastructure, and inclusively designed AI, built by Nigeria, for Nigeria.
