South African AI Infrastructure Startup Verascient Secures $1.2M Pre-Seed Funding

Verascient, an AI infrastructure company founded by South Africans Keagan Stokoe and Emile Ferreira, has successfully raised $1.2 million in an oversubscribed pre-seed funding round. The Cape Town-based startup, with international investor participation including Founder Collective and Cambridge Enterprise, is developing an "operating system" designed to help businesses integrate AI agents effectively. This platform utilizes a temporal knowledge graph to capture an organization's workflows and institutional knowledge, making it accessible for AI agents to communicate, identify action items, and execute tasks, initially targeting sectors like financial services, insurance, and logistics.

The company's core technology aims to overcome a significant barrier to enterprise AI adoption by securely organizing scattered information and making it available to AI agents while preserving historical context and permissions. This approach evolved after an initial product, an AI hallucination detector, became less relevant with improving large language models. Verascient now focuses on providing comprehensive infrastructure, including agent-to-agent messaging, background agents, and over 1,000 integrations with existing business systems.

A distinctive aspect of Verascient's model is its commitment to deploying AI engineers directly alongside customers, emphasizing that deep understanding of both technology and organizational deployment realities is crucial for ambitious leaders.
