Verascient, a startup based in Cape Town, South Africa, has successfully closed a $1.2 million pre-seed funding round. The company is developing infrastructure to provide AI agents with comprehensive access to an organization's accumulated knowledge and context, enabling them to operate more effectively within enterprise environments.

Initially, Verascient focused on building an AI hallucination detector. However, the founders pivoted after observing improvements in large language models, leading them to concentrate on enterprise deployment infrastructure instead. This strategic shift positions them uniquely, contrasting with other firms, including those in the South African insurance sector, who still view AI hallucination as a significant and persistent risk.

The core of Verascient's platform is a temporal knowledge graph designed to capture not just information, but also its historical context, access permissions, and provenance. This ensures AI agents can securely access relevant data while maintaining data integrity. The platform also includes agent-to-agent communication protocols, background agents, role-based access control, and over a thousand integrations with existing business systems.

Verascient is targeting sectors like financial services, insurance, and logistics, where institutional knowledge is often fragmented. The company's model includes deploying its engineers to work directly with customers on implementation, addressing a common challenge in AI adoption where pilots fail due to implementation issues rather than model capabilities.
