South African Mining Embraces AI for Enhanced Safety and Efficiency, PwC Study Reveals

A recent study by PwC and The Minerals Council of South Africa highlights the increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the nation's mining industry. Facing challenges like deeper operations, aging infrastructure, and skills gaps, the sector is turning to AI as a critical enabler rather than a distant ambition. The research, based on extensive interviews with mining CEOs and management, indicates that AI is already influencing decision-making, risk management, and value creation, particularly in areas like predictive maintenance and real-time monitoring.
The study emphasizes that AI's success in mining is not solely about technology, but fundamentally depends on strong leadership, adequate skills, robust data foundations, and effective change management. Mining leaders view AI as a tool to augment human capabilities, fostering safer operations, better decisions, and faster responses in complex environments. Practical applications cited include reducing unplanned downtime, improving safety through real-time condition monitoring, accelerating geological analysis, and optimizing energy use.
Furthermore, the research underscores a human-centric approach to AI adoption. Leaders stress that technology must support workers, not replace them, and advocate for investments in digital literacy and capability building. This focus aims to create resilient, future-ready workforces and contribute to inclusive growth in mining-adjacent communities. The study concludes that while AI is not a quick fix, incremental adoption, coupled with investment in both technology and people, is key to unlocking sustainable value and ensuring the South African mining industry's competitiveness.
