Suss Ads Founder Champions AI-Powered AdTech for Africa's Unique Digital Landscape

Dennis Maina, founder of Suss Ads, is spearheading the development of advertising technology specifically tailored for the African market. He argues that while Africa's digital economy is booming, much of the underlying technology originates from outside the continent and doesn't adequately address local nuances in consumer behavior, payment methods, and media ecosystems. Maina's vision is to create adtech solutions that are not only locally relevant but also globally competitive, shifting Africa from a technology consumer to a technology exporter.
Suss Ads, launched in 2021, aims to provide a unified platform for African businesses to manage, measure, and optimize their media campaigns across diverse channels, integrating both global platforms and local inventory. Maina emphasizes that local development brings proximity to the problem, enabling faster feedback loops, product iteration based on local context, and accountable support. This approach allows Suss Ads to build solutions that account for Africa's varied currencies, payment habits (like mobile money), languages, and regulatory environments, rather than treating them as exceptions.
The interview highlights the transformative potential of AI for African businesses, particularly in leveraging fragmented data for better decision-making. AI can help organize inconsistent data from various sources, identify patterns, and provide actionable insights more efficiently. Furthermore, AI's ability to operate across multiple languages, including local and vernacular ones, presents a significant opportunity to expand access to digital services and tools, fostering greater participation in the digital economy across Africa's linguistically diverse population. In advertising, AI is expected to streamline planning, audience targeting, creative adaptation, and campaign optimization.
