Google Launches AI Startup Accelerator Program in South Africa

Google has opened applications for its Google for Startups Accelerator: South Africa, a three-month program aimed at bolstering 15 growth-stage, AI-driven South African startups. This initiative is part of a broader commitment by Google to support 50 South African startups between 2024 and 2028, fostering local innovation and economic development through technology.

Selected startups will receive up to ZAR1 million (approximately US$60,000) in equity-free funding, allowing founders to maintain full ownership while accelerating their growth. Beyond capital, participants will gain direct access to Google's advanced AI tools, cloud infrastructure, and models, including hands-on experience with Gemini, to enhance their product development and technical capabilities.

The program specifically targets South African-led, historically disadvantaged person (HDP)-owned or controlled startups that are developing AI-driven products tailored for local market needs. The hybrid curriculum, running from September 28 to December 4, will pair founders with mentors and AI specialists to address product, data, and operational challenges, covering areas like roadmapping and growth strategy.

Folarin Aiyegbusi, head of startup ecosystem for Africa at Google, emphasized the company's long-term commitment to South Africa's tech ecosystem. He highlighted the program's role in empowering African startups to develop solutions for critical continental challenges in sectors such as health, agriculture, logistics, and education, enabling them to scale responsibly and compete globally.
