South Africa Leads African AI Funding, But Egypt's Strategy Aims for Sovereign AI Growth

South Africa currently leads African artificial intelligence funding, with its startups raising approximately $55 million this year, significantly more than Egypt's $22 million. However, this lead is largely due to a single major $38 million deal for Healthleap, a clinical AI startup. Excluding this outlier, South Africa's funding drops below Egypt's, highlighting different strengths and capital structures in the two ecosystems.
The South African AI landscape is characterized by depth in health and deep tech, with other notable deals including AI Diagnostics, Refiant AI, Cue, Verascient, and Cerebrium. Industry reports also indicate South Africa's AI ecosystem is the most mature on the continent, attracting a significant portion of overall African AI startup funding over the past few years.
Egypt's AI funding, while smaller, is more evenly distributed across various use cases, from financial decisioning platforms like Synapse Analytics to education, e-commerce, and customer experience AI. This broader spread suggests a diverse and growing set of applications for AI within the Egyptian market.
The two nations are also pursuing distinct AI policy paths. South Africa's 2024 National AI Policy Framework is rights-based and permissive, aiming to use AI to address systemic imbalances without setting hard industrial targets. In contrast, Egypt's 2025-2030 National AI Strategy is explicitly industrial, with ambitious targets for GDP contribution, trained specialists, startups, and the development of "sovereign AI" using local data and talent. This strategic divergence presents different implications for investors and the future growth of AI companies in each country.
