Helium Health Secures Google.org Grant to Deploy AI for Maternal Healthcare in Nigeria

Nigerian e-health startup Helium Health has received a significant US$2.5 million grant from Google.org, designated for the implementation of artificial intelligence (AI) solutions aimed at enhancing maternal healthcare services across Nigeria. This funding is part of the Google.org Impact Challenge: AI for Government Innovation, which supports organizations leveraging AI to improve public service delivery.

The grant will specifically back Helium Health's maternal health initiative, HeliumMum, focusing on deploying clinical AI models in Lagos, Delta, Kano, and Oyo states. Lagos is set to be the primary launch hub for these new AI tools. Additionally, Helium Health will participate in a Google.org Accelerator program, gaining access to technical expertise and support from Google's engineers and AI product specialists.

The HeliumMum platform will utilize AI to help pregnant women identify potential complications early, facilitating timely connections with appropriate healthcare providers. It integrates women with facilities equipped with electronic medical records and AI-powered clinical decision support systems, empowering healthcare professionals with better information for decision-making. The initiative also promises to provide governments with crucial data to strengthen maternal health services and pinpoint gaps in care.

Helium Health aims to expand its reach to an additional 1.9 million women over the next three years, with an ambitious goal of contributing to a 30 percent reduction in maternal mortality. This initiative is particularly impactful given that Nigeria currently accounts for nearly three out of every ten maternal deaths globally, highlighting the urgent need for innovative healthcare solutions.
