Helium Health Secures Google.org Funding to Expand AI-Powered Maternal Care in Nigeria

Helium Health, a Nigerian health technology firm, has received a grant from Google.org to significantly expand its AI-driven maternal healthcare initiative, HeliumMum, across Nigeria. This funding is part of Google.org's $30 million Impact Challenge: AI for Government Innovation, which supports organizations leveraging AI to enhance public services in collaboration with governments.

The initiative aims to deploy artificial intelligence models in primary maternal healthcare facilities, specifically targeting an additional 1.9 million women over the next three years. HeliumMum utilizes AI to identify early pregnancy risks, connect women with appropriate care, and provide healthcare providers with crucial clinical decision-support tools. The program will initially focus on Lagos, Delta, Kano, and Oyo states, with Lagos serving as the primary launchpad.

Over the three-year period, Helium Health plans to integrate AI-powered tools into 150 healthcare facilities, onboard 300,000 women, and deliver maternal health education to 1.9 million women. The company projects a 30% reduction in facility-based maternal mortality and a 35% decrease in the time it takes for governments to identify and respond to emerging health trends. This expansion builds on Helium Health's decade-long efforts, which have already reached over 3.5 million women through its maternal health programs.

Google.org's support extends beyond financial aid, including technical expertise from Google engineers and AI product specialists through a dedicated accelerator program. This collaboration is crucial for scaling AI solutions in public services, especially in regions like Africa where healthcare systems face challenges such as limited infrastructure, fragmented records, and staff shortages. The success of this deployment in Nigeria will serve as a significant case study for AI's potential in improving health outcomes across the continent.
