Nigerian E-commerce Platform Sokofa Uses AI to Connect African Artisans with Global Diaspora
Nigerian startup Sokofa has launched an innovative e-commerce platform designed to bridge the gap between African artisans and the global diaspora. The marketplace facilitates the sale of authentic African fashion, art, and beauty products to buyers in Europe and North America, directly from verified vendors across the African continent. This initiative aims to address long-standing challenges faced by diaspora shoppers, such as finding reliable sellers and ensuring product fit.
A key differentiator for Sokofa is its integration of artificial intelligence into the shopping experience. The platform features an AI-powered virtual try-on tool, allowing buyers to upload a photo and visualize how a garment would look on them within seconds. This technology, coupled with a custom measurement system that caters to up to 16 specific fields, ensures a personalized fit for handmade clothing, moving away from standard factory sizing.
Founder Tope Abuloye emphasizes that Sokofa's mission is to elevate Africa's presence in global e-commerce, enabling African artisans to be discoverable and trusted by an international audience. By combining vendor verification, made-to-measure ordering, and AI fit previews, Sokofa offers a comprehensive solution that mitigates the risks and inconveniences traditionally associated with purchasing authentic African goods from abroad.
The self-funded startup has already onboarded multiple vendors and made sales, demonstrating early traction. While initially focused on African-based artisans, Sokofa plans to expand its vendor recruitment to include Africans in the diaspora who create African-inspired products, further broadening its reach and impact. The platform operates on a commission model, supporting sustainable growth for both the company and its network of artisans.
This platform represents a significant step in leveraging technology to empower African creative industries. By providing a secure, efficient, and technologically advanced marketplace, Sokofa not only facilitates economic opportunities for artisans but also promotes African cultural heritage on a global scale, making authentic products more accessible and desirable to a worldwide audience.
