African RegTech Conference in Abuja Highlights AI's Role in Financial Innovation

The RegTech Africa Conference and Expo (RACE 2026) recently concluded in Abuja, Nigeria, serving as a significant gathering for regulators, investors, technology innovators, and financial institutions from across the African continent. This three-day event, held at the prestigious State House Banquet Hall, solidified its reputation as Africa's premier platform for advancing regulatory technology, digital financial services, and broader ecosystem innovation, fostering crucial dialogue between regulatory bodies, nascent technologies, and capital providers.

A key highlight of RACE 2026 was the RegTech Africa Startup World Cup Abuja Regional Challenge, organized through a strategic partnership with Pegasus Tech Ventures. This competition featured 15 carefully selected startups, chosen from hundreds of applications across Africa, presenting solutions in diverse sectors including fintech, regulatory technology, cybersecurity, GovTech, and notably, artificial intelligence. These innovators pitched their solutions to a distinguished panel of judges and investors, with evaluations based on criteria such as innovation, scalability, revenue potential, and societal impact.

Cyril Okoroigwe, CEO of RegTech Africa, articulated the organization's commitment to building a robust, enabling infrastructure for the African startup ecosystem, moving beyond mere discussions. The Startup World Cup Regional Challenge specifically aims to provide Africa's most promising innovators with global visibility, access to essential capital, and strategic partnerships necessary for scaling their ventures. This initiative underscores a growing international recognition of the caliber of African regulatory technology and fintech solutions.

Mehtic Technology, creators of the BankPlus Core Banking Infrastructure platform, emerged as the winner of the Abuja Regional Challenge. This victory secures their advancement to the Startup World Cup Global Finals in Silicon Valley, United States, where they will compete for a $1 million investment prize and global strategic partnerships against startups from around the world. Their success is a testament to the quality of African fintech innovation and the rigorous selection process, signaling a vibrant future for the continent's digital financial and regulatory landscape.
