Bridging the AI Adoption Gap for African SMEs
Many small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Africa are dabbling in AI for basic tasks like writing product captions, but few are integrating it into core business operations, strategy, and decision-making. This significant gap is highlighted by Gori Yahaya, CEO of UpSkill Universe, who notes that only 9% of SMEs have embedded AI, with nearly 70% still exploring its potential. This indicates a challenge not of access to technology, but of understanding how AI can deliver substantial business value.
To address this, UpSkill Universe, in partnership with HP, is launching the AI Skills for Business Programme. This initiative aims to provide free, practical AI training to 55,000 SMEs across Nigeria and South Africa via the HP LIFE platform. The program builds on a successful pilot that reached 40,000 business owners, emphasizing a practical approach to help businesses identify specific areas where AI can make the most difference, rather than just superficial use.
Yahaya identifies fear of errors and a lack of relevant examples as key inhibitors. He draws a parallel with mobile internet adoption in Africa, where coverage far outstripped actual usage due to issues of affordability, relevance, and confidence. He believes AI is following a similar trajectory, and true gains come from understanding which weekly tasks can be automated and adapting quickly to the tools' limitations and benefits. He anticipates early adoption in marketing and customer service, especially given the prevalence of social commerce in sub-Saharan Africa.
A crucial insight from the article is the opportunity in African languages. While global models struggle with languages like Hausa, local models are proving more effective. Yahaya sees this as a significant opening, suggesting that whoever develops AI tools proficient in African languages will control a vital layer of the continent's AI ecosystem. He emphasizes that the true measure of progress will be AI adoption beyond tech hubs, in sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and local services.
