Deepfakes and Disinformation: Nigeria's 2027 Election Faces AI-Powered Information Warfare

A new report from Bloomwit Africa, titled "Navigating Nigeria 2027," warns that Nigeria's upcoming 2027 general election will be significantly impacted by the widespread use of generative AI tools. The report highlights that the country's information landscape has already been transformed by fabricated audio, video, and images of public figures, with electoral authorities acknowledging AI-generated disinformation and deepfakes as major threats.

The core argument of the report centers on a structural asymmetry: the cost of creating and distributing convincing deepfakes has plummeted due to generative AI and encrypted messaging platforms like WhatsApp, where 96.5% of Nigerian internet users are active. Conversely, the cost of detecting and correcting this misinformation has not decreased, creating a critical gap. The report emphasizes that most organizations are ill-equipped to monitor the private, multilingual channels where political narratives often originate and spread rapidly.

Bloomwit Africa's Executive Director, Oti Egwu, stresses that the danger lies in the reduced time between a lie's spread and its detection, now mere minutes thanks to AI and encrypted networks. The report advises businesses, investors, and institutions to assume that sophisticated fabrications can be cheaply produced and instantly distributed, urging them to develop proactive detection and rebuttal capabilities before the election cycle intensifies.

The report proposes a "Bloomwit Africa Monitoring Standard," recommending that organizations detect and brief response teams within an hour, across all relevant languages and closed channels. It also suggests pre-preparing synthetic-media denial protocols and maintaining consistent, authentic communications to make fabricated content easily identifiable as off-brand. With Nigeria ranking high in trust, the stakes are particularly high, as betrayal of trust can be severely punished, making preparation crucial ahead of the early January 2027 presidential poll.
