NBA Africa Accelerator Boosts African AI Startups with OpenAI Partnership
NBA Africa has announced the five winning startups from its second Triple-Double Accelerator program, an initiative designed to foster early-stage African innovators in sports, fitness, AI, blockchain, and creative industries. The winners were revealed at a Demo Day held at Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) in Kigali, Rwanda, following a rigorous selection process from over 700 applicants across 32 countries. This program underscores NBA Africa's commitment to nurturing the continent's burgeoning tech ecosystem.
Among the top honorees, two startups with significant AI components stood out. Reborn, a Moroccan sports technology company, secured first place for its comprehensive AI-driven performance indicators for athletes. Athlon Technology from Egypt, which uses mobile and AI-based video analysis for amateur sports, took third. These AI-focused winners, along with second-place Fitclan (Egypt), will receive cash prizes, a slot in CMU-Africa’s 12-month Business Incubation Program, API credits, and a valuable immersion day with the OpenAI engineering team, highlighting the program's strong partnerships.
The remaining winners, Atsur and Songdis from Nigeria, focus on blockchain for art investment and digital music distribution respectively, also gaining access to CMU-Africa's incubation. The accelerator's broader goal is to bolster Africa's tech landscape by connecting founders with essential capital, mentorship, and global networks, including key partners like OpenAI, ServiceNow, and ALX Ventures.
NBA Africa CEO Clare Akamanzi emphasized that the innovative solutions presented by this cohort are instrumental in shaping the future of sport and entertainment across the continent. This accelerator is a crucial part of NBA Africa's strategy to deepen its engagement with Africa's entrepreneurial spirit and drive growth in digital, sports, and creative sectors, creating a significant impact on local economies and technological advancement.
