Google Extends Free AI Plus to Nigerian Students, Expands Across Sub-Saharan Africa

Google has announced a significant initiative to provide Nigerian university students with a free 12-month subscription to its AI Plus services, valued at ₦92,400. This offer, part of the broader Gemini Student Offer, is available to students aged 18 and older enrolled in accredited tertiary institutions. The program is also being rolled out across 27 other Sub-Saharan African countries, demonstrating Google's commitment to enhancing AI accessibility in the region.

The AI Plus subscription includes advanced tools designed to support academic pursuits, such as Deep Research for extensive projects, Gemini Live for real-time voice interactions, and Gemini Study Notebooks which convert lecture notes into quizzes. Additional benefits encompass unlimited file uploads, 400GB of cloud storage, and interactive 3D visualizations, all aimed at fostering a more dynamic and engaging learning environment.

A key focus of Google's AI strategy in education is "Guided Learning," which positions Gemini as a tutor rather than a simple answer provider. This approach, supported by a study in West Africa involving 1,763 students, showed substantial learning growth where over 90% of interactions focused on conceptual understanding. Educators can also integrate this feature into Google Classroom to ensure students engage critically with AI tools.
