South African Startup Vambo AI Unveils MORENA, a Multilingual Open-Weight AI Model for African Languages

Vambo AI, a South African startup, has launched MORENA, a new open-weight language model designed to support 12 African languages, alongside English and French. This 1.5-billion parameter model was reportedly trained from scratch and is touted by its co-founder, Isheanesu Misi, as the largest open African AI model with such a development origin.

MORENA's open-weight nature means its trained parameters are publicly available, allowing developers and researchers to utilize and adapt it for various applications. Vambo AI suggests fine-tuning MORENA as a foundational model rather than deploying it directly. The model covers a significant range of languages including ChiShona, Kiswahili, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, isiZulu, isiXhosa, Kinyarwanda, Setswana, Afrikaans, isiNdebele, and Nigerian Pidgin.

While specific details like licensing, training data, and funding sources are not disclosed in the reviewed coverage, the initiative is notable for its focus on African linguistic diversity. Vambo AI also offers smaller variants of MORENA and its platform provides tools for writing, searching, translating, and transcribing, catering to both individuals and businesses through an API. Support for the project reportedly came from UNDP, AIHub4SD, and CINECA, which provided computing resources.
