Industrial AI in Africa: Solving the Data Plumbing Problem for Scalable Deployment

A report by Everest Group and Capgemini Engineering highlights that over 75% of industrial AI pilot projects fail to scale, not due to algorithmic limitations, but because of fragmented factory IT and operational technology (OT) systems. These architectural issues prevent data from flowing efficiently, hindering automated decision-making and large-scale AI deployment.
The findings, applied to Morocco by a local business publication, resonate strongly with the country's industrial landscape. Morocco, a major automotive manufacturer in Africa, possesses a significant industrial base that has grown incrementally, often adding new machinery and software without a comprehensive architectural overhaul. This creates the very data silos and legacy infrastructure challenges that the report identifies as barriers to AI adoption.
The report recommends prioritizing data architecture over algorithms, suggesting manufacturers first establish unified namespaces and hybrid edge-cloud systems to connect equipment and structure data. This approach is particularly relevant for Moroccan manufacturers dealing with aging infrastructure and technical debt. The emphasis on foundational data infrastructure before full automation is crucial, especially as cybersecurity and compliance become integral to these evolving systems.
Morocco's proactive stance in AI development, including the Nexus AI Factory and the AI Made in Morocco initiative, underscores its ambition.
