Nigerian Financial Sector Confronts AI-Powered Cybercrime with New Compliance Solutions

Nigeria's financial institutions are grappling with a significant shift in the landscape of financial crime, driven by the increasing use of artificial intelligence and digital tools by fraudsters. This challenge was the central theme of the Adhere Compliance Frontline Forum in Lagos, organized by SmartComply. The event brought together key stakeholders from banks, fintech companies, regulatory bodies, and law enforcement agencies, including representatives from NIBSS, EFCC, and the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, to strategize on combating these evolving threats.
The forum highlighted that traditional security measures are no longer sufficient against modern cybercriminals who leverage tactics like SIM swap fraud, ransomware, and social engineering. Assistant Inspector-General of Police Uche Henry Ifeanyi, who chairs INTERPOL's African Working Group on Cybercrime, emphasized that today's financial criminals operate remotely with laptops and smartphones, a stark contrast to past methods. He stressed the necessity of AI-powered security tools to monitor transactions in real-time and detect unusual activities before losses occur.
In response to these challenges, SmartComply unveiled Adhere, its new AI-powered compliance platform, alongside a report titled 'The Compliance Reckoning,' which analyzes the evolution of financial crime and regulatory compliance in Nigeria. The platform aims to enable financial institutions to proactively detect risks during transactions, moving beyond reactive compliance. The discussions underscored a collective understanding that a smarter, more technologically advanced approach is crucial for safeguarding Nigeria's financial sector against sophisticated cyber threats.
