Viamo Launches Offline AI Voice Platform in Ghana to Bridge Digital Divide

Viamo, a Canadian digital nonprofit with roots in Ghana, has launched "231 Voice Platform" in partnership with MTN Ghana. This innovative service provides access to AI-powered information via toll-free phone calls, targeting millions of Ghanaians who lack smartphones or reliable internet connectivity. The platform, which supports six local languages including Twi, Ewe, and Hausa, allows users to interact with an AI system called Ask Viamo Anything (AVA) without needing an app or data plan.

The 231 platform leverages interactive voice response technology to deliver what Viamo terms "offline AI." This means the system can engage in natural spoken conversations and provide information on various topics, such as health, agriculture, and financial literacy, entirely over a basic mobile phone network. This approach re-purposes existing mobile infrastructure to democratize access to AI tools, bypassing the common assumption of smartphone and internet prerequisites.

Ghana is the fourth African country to implement Viamo's voice platform with MTN, following successful rollouts in Liberia, Zambia, and Rwanda, with Nigeria slated for 2027. This expansion highlights Viamo's commitment to inclusive communication across the continent. The company, which now operates in 23 countries, emphasizes that conversational AI is a vital tool for underserved populations, offering a lifeline beyond mere convenience. The platform also serves as a valuable feedback mechanism for partner organizations, helping them understand community needs and refine their programs.

The success of 231 will depend on its adoption by government agencies, health providers, and other nonprofits who can integrate their content into the system.
