Nairobi Securities Exchange to Launch East Africa's First AI-Focused ETF, CEO Cautions on Market Bubble

The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) is developing East Africa's inaugural Exchange Traded Fund (ETF) dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) stocks, with an anticipated launch by year-end. This initiative aims to provide Kenyan investors with easier local access to the booming global AI market, which currently requires them to invest abroad. The NSE's CEO, Frank Mwiti, highlighted strong demand from younger investors seeking AI exposure over traditional sectors like cement manufacturing.
Mwiti emphasized that the ETF's launch is contingent on a careful assessment of the global AI rally, expressing concerns about a potential market bubble. He stated that the NSE would delay the offering if the AI sector appears overvalued, a cautious stance that contrasts with the prevailing bullish sentiment often seen in African AI discussions. This prudent approach aims to protect investors from potential market downturns.
The proposed ETF will likely be denominated in Kenyan shillings to mitigate foreign exchange risks for local investors. While companies like Microsoft are considered reference points, the inclusion of privately held AI firms such as Anthropic and OpenAI suggests a thematic basket approach rather than direct shareholding. This move by the NSE aligns with Kenya's broader strategy to position itself as a hub for AI innovation, complementing initiatives like the Qubit Hub AI research lab and the country's promotion of its renewable energy grid as an AI investment advantage.
This development is significant for African capital markets, as AI-focused ETFs are currently uncommon across the continent, unlike in developed markets. By offering this product, the NSE seeks to diversify its market offerings, retain local capital, and cater to a growing, investment-savvy young population interested in high-growth technology sectors. The ETF represents a crucial step in integrating African financial markets with global technological trends and fostering local investment in emerging industries.
