Mozambique Establishes National AI Association to Foster Local Innovation

Mozambique has officially launched the Mozambican Association of Artificial Intelligence (AMIA) in Maputo, marking a significant step in the country's efforts to build a robust national technology ecosystem. This new association aims to unite various stakeholders, including government bodies, private sector companies, academic institutions, researchers, and civil society, to collaboratively develop and implement AI solutions tailored to Mozambique's specific needs.
The formation of AMIA comes at a time when artificial intelligence is increasingly recognized globally for its transformative potential across diverse sectors such as agriculture, healthcare, education, banking, and public administration. For Mozambique, AI is seen as a crucial instrument for enhancing public service delivery, stimulating innovation, and generating new economic opportunities, particularly for its youth population.
INTIC, the National Institute of Information and Communication Technologies, highlighted that AMIA's creation reflects the growing talent pool within Mozambique capable of contributing to its nascent AI sector. The government is also actively developing policy frameworks, including a proposed National Artificial Intelligence Strategy and a National Data Governance Policy, to ensure the responsible and effective adoption of AI technologies. Financial institutions like the Commercial and Investment Bank (BCI) have also voiced support, viewing AMIA as a platform for knowledge exchange and investment in AI applications.
This initiative underscores Mozambique's commitment to laying the institutional and policy groundwork necessary to engage meaningfully with the expanding AI economy, both regionally and internationally. It represents a proactive approach to harnessing AI for national development and economic diversification.
