Morocco and India Collaborate on AI for Local Languages in Public Services

Morocco and India have established a joint commission to integrate Moroccan Darija and Amazigh languages into Idarati, Morocco's online administrative services platform. This partnership aims to leverage AI, specifically large and small language models, to enhance digital public infrastructure and make government services more accessible to Moroccan citizens.
The collaboration highlights India's distinct approach to digital public infrastructure, offering open, interoperable models like Aadhaar and UPI, which contrasts with proprietary platforms often provided by Western or Chinese tech giants. This aligns with Morocco's stated ambition to be a "third voice" in AI governance, seeking frameworks distinct from those of the US, Europe, and China.
The initiative is a concrete step in Morocco's broader "AI Made in Morocco" strategy, which includes partnerships with companies like Mistral AI for multilingual model development and significant investments in AI infrastructure. The focus on integrating local languages into a functional government service like Idarati provides a clear, practical benchmark for the success of these AI models, moving beyond mere research artifacts.
This development is significant for Africa as it showcases a practical application of AI for language inclusivity in public services, a challenge faced by many African nations with diverse linguistic landscapes. It also demonstrates a unique South-South collaboration in the AI space, potentially offering a template for other African countries looking to develop their own digital public infrastructure and localized AI solutions.
