Egypt Unveils Karnak Chat for Arabic Generative AI and Digital Autonomy

Egypt has launched Karnak Chat, an intelligent conversational system built upon its proprietary Karnak large language model. Developed by Egyptian experts at the Applied Innovation Center, an affiliate of the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology, this initiative aims to bolster local AI capabilities and foster generative AI applications tailored for the Arabic language.

Karnak Chat is designed to accurately comprehend and generate both Modern Standard Arabic and Egyptian colloquial Arabic. Beyond the chatbot, the Karnak model serves as a foundational base for developing diverse generative AI applications across various sectors within Egypt and the broader Arab world, emphasizing language and cultural understanding.

A key objective of the Karnak project is to enhance digital sovereignty. The software and its applications can be securely operated within local data centers, offering greater control over AI system deployment. This local development and deployment capability positions Egypt to expand its influence in the generative AI landscape, addressing regional linguistic and cultural needs while promoting self-reliance in AI technology.
