Nigerian Startup Intron Unveils Advanced Voice AI for African Multilingualism

Nigerian startup Intron has launched Sahara v2.5, a significant upgrade to its Africa-centric voice technology platform. This new version addresses the common practice of language mixing, or code-switching, in African conversations, allowing AI systems to understand and process sentences that blend multiple languages.

Intron, founded in 2020, initially developed Africa's first clinical speech recognition platform. Following a US$1.6 million pre-seed funding round in July 2024, the company has expanded its real-time voice AI solutions across various sectors, including financial services, telecommunications, legal, and government agencies.

Sahara v2.5 introduces bilingual language mixing speech recognition for 12 African languages, including Zulu, Hausa, Swahili, and Luganda, and boasts the world's first African trilingual model for Kinyarwanda, English, and French. Intron claims its technology outperforms major global AI players like Gemini, ElevenLabs, and Meta in these specific African language contexts. The platform also expands its overall African language coverage to 31 languages with new support for Nupe, Kanuri, Nigerian Fulfulde, Tigrinya, Kikuyu, Dholuo, and Somali.

This innovation is crucial for Africa, where code-switching is a natural part of daily communication. Intron's CEO, Tobi Olatunji, emphasizes the need for AI that adapts to how Africans genuinely speak, preventing users from having to alter their natural speech patterns for machines. This advancement promises more inclusive and efficient voice-driven experiences across critical services and industries on the continent.
