MTN to Build 150MW AI Data Centers in South Africa and Nigeria, Expanding Digital Infrastructure Footprint

MTN Group, a major telecommunications company, is embarking on a significant expansion of its digital infrastructure by developing 150 megawatts of AI-ready data center capacity. This ambitious project will initially focus on South Africa and Nigeria, aiming to meet the escalating demand for advanced computing power across the African continent. The initiative is being pursued through a new entity, Africa Data Hub Holding Ltd., a joint venture with a UAE-backed investment platform, where MTN will hold a minority stake.

This move is a core component of MTN's 'Ambition 2030' strategy, which seeks to diversify the company's growth beyond traditional connectivity into areas like fintech and digital infrastructure. The development of AI-ready data centers is critical, as AI applications require substantial computing power, reliable energy, efficient cooling, and high-capacity network connectivity. MTN's existing infrastructure and enterprise relationships in South Africa and Nigeria provide a strong foundation for this expansion.

By taking a minority stake in Africa Data Hub, MTN aims to leverage external capital and specialized data center expertise while contributing its extensive network and customer base. This strategic approach allows the company to manage the considerable costs associated with such large-scale infrastructure projects. The plan underscores MTN's commitment to playing a central role in Africa's burgeoning digital economy, supporting the growth of AI and other data-intensive technologies.
