Nigeria Unveils Comprehensive Digital Postcode System to Boost Economy and Services

Nigeria has officially launched its National Digital Alphanumeric Postcode System, assigning a unique 11-character code to every addressable building across the country. This system, developed by the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), utilizes geographic information technology to provide significantly more accurate location data than previous systems.
Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, emphasized that this initiative is crucial for economic development, aiming to facilitate trade, improve service delivery, and support President Bola Tinubu’s goal of a $1 trillion economy. Accurate addressing is expected to reduce losses from failed deliveries, enhance emergency response, bolster security, and streamline e-commerce and financial services by providing clear customer verification.
The project, which has been in development for over a decade, gained momentum through partnerships with the National Population Commission and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), linking postcodes to National Identification Numbers (NIN). The government aims for over 90% building coverage by the launch date, with full nationwide implementation by the end of 2026, encouraging widespread adoption among citizens and businesses to transform daily life and access to services.
