Côte d'Ivoire Expands Zipline Drone Health Network, Citing AI-Powered Logistics as Key to National Healthcare Access

Côte d'Ivoire has entered an eight-year public-private partnership with Zipline to significantly expand its autonomous medical delivery network. This ambitious plan will see Zipline's operations grow from a single distribution center in Daloa to ten facilities nationwide, aiming to serve over 2,200 health facilities and more than 12 million people. The expansion is highlighted as one of Africa's largest deployments of AI and robotics in healthcare logistics.

The financing structure is notable, with the US government providing upfront infrastructure funding, partly through a $150 million State Department award, while the Ivorian government commits to covering ongoing operational costs. This model is designed to ensure sustainability beyond donor funding cycles, placing operational control with the local ministry and addressing a common challenge in donor-funded health technology initiatives across Africa.

The core AI application lies in the logistics and inventory management system, rather than just the drone flight. This system enables on-demand ordering, real-time tracking of inventory and deliveries, and predictive demand forecasting across a vast network of health facilities. This capability is crucial for reducing stockouts, preventing expiries, maintaining the cold chain, and improving emergency response, particularly in regions where seasonal road access hinders traditional supply chains.

The initiative aligns with Côte d'Ivoire's Vision 2030 and universal health coverage goals, complementing broader national AI development efforts. Zipline emphasizes a commitment to local operation, projecting hundreds of skilled jobs and training Ivorian talent in various technical and operational roles, aiming for a locally run network within eight years. This expansion builds on the success of the Daloa center, which has already delivered millions of medical products and vaccines since 2023.
