AI Models Systematically Undervalue African Time, New Research Reveals

New research investigating how large language models (LLMs) assign value to human time across different countries has found a consistent pattern of undervaluing time in Africa. The study, which covered 193 countries and five different LLMs, simulated scenarios where users experienced a 60-minute appointment delay and measured the compensation the LLMs suggested.
The findings indicate that LLMs consistently recommend the highest compensation for users in Europe, while predominantly suggesting the lowest for those in Africa. This disparity suggests that geographical biases are deeply embedded within these AI models, which could lead to differential treatment in real-world applications where LLMs act as agents or assistants.
The researchers compared the LLMs' responses against economic indicators like GDP per capita (Purchasing Power Parity) and mean income, as well as a 'Patience Score' derived from existing literature. They observed that, based on GDP_PPP, LLMs also underestimate the value of time for users in Asia and South America, highlighting a broader issue of regional bias beyond just Africa.
For Africa, this systematic undervaluation is particularly significant. As AI tools become more integrated into daily life and decision-making processes, such embedded biases could translate into tangible disadvantages for African users, affecting everything from customer service interactions to financial recommendations and resource allocation. Understanding and mitigating these biases is crucial for ensuring equitable and fair AI deployment across the continent.
