Nigerian Fintechs Prioritize Practical AI Applications Over Existential Threats

Nigerian fintech leaders are focused on leveraging artificial intelligence to solve immediate business challenges like fraud detection, credit scoring, and improving customer access, rather than engaging in global debates about AI's potential to end humanity. This pragmatic approach was a key theme at Nigeria Fintech Week 2026, where panelists discussed the tangible benefits and operational hurdles of AI adoption in the country's financial sector.
The discussion highlighted that while many in Nigeria use AI tools like ChatGPT, there's a significant concern about "cognitive surrender" – blindly trusting AI outputs. Fintech executives emphasized the need for robust, secure infrastructure capable of handling large datasets, as the quality of data directly impacts the effectiveness of AI models. Bad data leads to bad decisions, particularly in lending, where the costs can be substantial.
AI is already widely used for fraud detection and credit scoring among Nigerian fintechs, driven by significant financial losses to fraud. However, access to high-quality data remains a major challenge for scaling these applications. The panel also explored AI's potential to democratize credit access by enabling more nuanced risk assessments for individuals with limited traditional credit histories.
Ultimately, the Nigerian fintech industry is seeking clear returns on investment from AI, focusing on solutions that cut losses, boost productivity, or attract new customers. The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) also recognizes the importance of strong governance and supervision for AI-driven decisions in finance, particularly concerning data quality, transparency, and human oversight to mitigate risks like algorithmic bias.
