Pan-African Initiative Offers $12 Million for AI and Digital Technology Research

The Science Granting Councils Initiative (SGCI), a collaborative platform of 20 national science funding councils across sub-Saharan Africa, has launched a significant call for Expressions of Interest. This initiative aims to bolster digital technology research across the continent, aligning with the African Union's Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa 2034 (STISA-2034). The funding, totaling CA$12 million, is specifically designed to address the existing gaps in compute capacity, connectivity, and digital skills within Africa.
A key focus area of this funding call is Artificial Intelligence and Digital Technologies. It outlines two primary research avenues: the development of AI applications for critical sectors such as agriculture, health, environment, and education, and the scaling of proven AI innovations. Additionally, it seeks to strengthen the integration of AI in scientific research. The second avenue concentrates on learning and entrepreneurship, supporting STEM and AI skills development programs for youth, women, and researchers, alongside fostering digital and AI-enabled startups.
Proposals are encouraged to build upon existing continental strategies, including the African Union's Continental AI Strategy. Consortia must include at least three institutions from different eligible SGCI countries, which encompass nations like Kenya, Nigeria, Rwanda, South Africa, Ghana, and Tanzania. Each participating institution can request between CA$50,000 and CA$300,000, with projects spanning up to 36 months. The deadline for applications is September 25, 2026.
This funding represents a substantial commitment to advancing Africa's digital and AI capabilities. By investing in research and development across various sectors and fostering local talent and entrepreneurship, the initiative aims to bridge the digital divide and empower African nations to leverage AI for sustainable development and economic growth. It underscores a strategic vision for a more integrated and technologically advanced continent.
