Zambian University Students Widely Use ChatGPT, Prompting Calls for AI Policy in Higher Education
A recent study published in Frontiers in Education reveals that generative artificial intelligence, specifically ChatGPT, is extensively known and utilized among university students in Zambia. The multi-institutional cross-sectional study, involving 1,829 students, found that over 96% were aware of ChatGPT, and more than 85% had used it prior to the research. This widespread adoption highlights the rapid integration of AI tools into academic life within the country.
The research delved into students' attitudes and usage patterns, identifying key factors influencing their engagement with ChatGPT. While a significant portion (73.3%) found ChatGPT easy to use and 64% perceived it as useful, there was also a high awareness of associated risks, with 74.8% acknowledging potential dangers. Positive attitudes towards ChatGPT were more prevalent among older students (aged 40+) and those influenced by technology and social circles, whereas perceived risks were linked to less positive attitudes and reduced usage.
The findings underscore a critical juncture for Zambian higher education institutions. The prevalent use of ChatGPT, coupled with varying perceptions of its utility and risks, necessitates a proactive approach. The study concludes that institutions must develop clear policies and integrate AI literacy into their curricula to guide students toward responsible and effective use of generative AI technologies.
This research provides valuable insights into the current landscape of AI adoption in African higher education. The collaboration of authors from various African countries, including Zambia, Malawi, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Uganda, Nigeria, and South Africa, further emphasizes the continent-wide relevance of these findings. As AI continues to evolve, understanding student behavior and perceptions is crucial for shaping educational strategies that harness AI's benefits while mitigating its challenges across Africa.
